Wyoming Internet Law Law News - Wyoming Legislature Introduces Internet Privacy Bill to Protect Residents' Data

In response to growing concerns over online privacy and data security, the Wyoming Legislature has introduced a new bill aimed at protecting residents' personal information. The bill, titled the Wyoming Internet Privacy Act, was unveiled on February 21, 2026, and seeks to establish clear guidelines for how internet service providers (ISPs) can collect, store, and use customer data.Under the proposed legislation, ISPs operating in Wyoming would be required to obtain explicit consent from customers before collecting any personal information, such as browsing history, location data, or app usage. The bill also mandates that ISPs take measures to securely store and protect this data from unauthorized access or disclosure. In addition to protecting consumer data, the Wyoming Internet Privacy Act includes provisions aimed at promoting transparency and accountability among ISPs. The bill requires ISPs to disclose to customers how their data is being used, and provides individuals with the right to opt out of data collection practices they are not comfortable with.Supporters of the bill argue that these measures are essential in the digital age, where personal information is increasingly being used for targeted advertising, surveillance, and other potentially harmful purposes. State Senator Emily Reynolds, who co-sponsored the bill, emphasized the importance of safeguarding residents' data in an increasingly connected world."We have seen too many instances of data breaches and misuse of personal information in recent years," Senator Reynolds said. "It is crucial that we take proactive steps to protect Wyoming residents from these threats and ensure that their privacy rights are respected."The Wyoming Internet Privacy Act is still in the early stages of the legislative process, but it has already garnered significant support from both lawmakers and privacy advocates. If passed, the bill would make Wyoming one of the first states in the country to implement comprehensive internet privacy protections for its residents.
