Washington Elder Law Law News - Washington State Legislature Passes New Elder Law Legislation to Protect Vulnerable Adults

On July 31, 2025, the Washington State Legislature made a significant step in protecting the rights and well-being of elder adults by passing new elder law legislation aimed at preventing financial exploitation and abuse of vulnerable individuals. The new legislation, known as the Elder and Vulnerable Adult Protection Act, includes several key provisions designed to strengthen protections for older adults in Washington. One of the most notable features of the act is the establishment of a statewide registry for individuals who have been convicted of financial exploitation of elders or vulnerable adults. This registry will help prevent those with a history of exploiting vulnerable individuals from gaining employment in positions of trust or authority over seniors.Additionally, the act extends the statute of limitations for prosecuting financial exploitation of elders, giving law enforcement officials more time to investigate and prosecute cases of elder abuse. It also increases penalties for those convicted of financial exploitation, in an effort to deter would-be abusers from targeting vulnerable adults.Furthermore, the Elder and Vulnerable Adult Protection Act expands resources for elder abuse prevention and intervention, including increased funding for adult protective services and enhanced training for professionals who work with older adults. The passage of this legislation was met with widespread praise from elder advocacy groups and legal experts, who hailed it as a crucial step towards protecting Washington's aging population from financial exploitation and abuse."This new legislation sends a strong message that elder abuse will not be tolerated in our state," said Sarah Johnson, a spokesperson for the Washington Elder Rights Coalition. "We are grateful to the Legislature for taking action to protect our vulnerable adults and hold abusers accountable."The Elder and Vulnerable Adult Protection Act will go into effect on January 1, 2026, and is expected to have a significant impact on preventing elder abuse and exploitation in Washington State. Advocates hope that the legislation will serve as a model for other states looking to bolster protections for their aging populations.
