Virginia Media Law Law News - Virginia Passes New Media Law to Protect Journalists and Freedom of the Press

On November 16, 2025, Virginia Governor Sarah Thompson signed into law a sweeping new media bill aimed at protecting journalists and ensuring the freedom of the press in the state. The legislation, known as the Virginia Media Rights Act, comes in response to a growing trend of attacks on journalists and attempts to suppress the dissemination of information by government entities. The Virginia Media Rights Act includes a number of provisions designed to safeguard journalists and their work. One key element of the law is the establishment of a Media Freedom Commission, which will serve as an independent body tasked with overseeing and enforcing the rights of journalists in the state. The commission will have the authority to investigate allegations of harassment, censorship, and other forms of interference with the media, and to issue recommendations for remedial action. In addition, the Virginia Media Rights Act strengthens protections for journalists by making it a criminal offense to obstruct or interfere with their work. This includes provisions to prevent law enforcement from seizing journalists' equipment or materials without a warrant, and to prohibit the use of subpoenas to compel journalists to reveal their confidential sources. The new law also includes provisions to promote transparency and accountability in government by ensuring greater access to public records and meetings. Under the Virginia Media Rights Act, government agencies will be required to provide timely and accurate information to journalists, and to make their records and proceedings open to the public to the greatest extent possible.Governor Thompson hailed the passage of the Virginia Media Rights Act as a significant step forward for freedom of the press in the state. In a statement, she emphasized the importance of protecting journalists' ability to hold those in power accountable and to inform the public. The Virginia Media Rights Act is set to take effect on January 1, 2026, and is expected to serve as a model for other states seeking to strengthen protections for journalists and uphold the principles of a free and independent press.
