Virginia Internet Law Law News - Virginia Governor Signs New Internet Privacy Law

On November 16, 2025, Virginia made headlines as Governor Jane Smith signed a new internet privacy law aimed at protecting the personal data of its residents. The law, known as the Virginia Online Privacy Protection Act (VOPPA), will require website and app operators to obtain explicit consent before collecting or selling personal information.Under VOPPA, internet companies will be required to disclose in detail the types of data they collect, how it is used, and whether it is shared with third parties. Users must also be given the option to opt out of having their personal information collected or sold.Governor Smith emphasized the importance of safeguarding individual privacy in the digital age, stating, "As technology continues to advance, so must our laws to ensure the protection of our personal data. With the signing of VOPPA, Virginia is taking a crucial step towards empowering consumers to have greater control over their online privacy."The law also includes provisions for enforcement and penalties for non-compliance. Companies found to be in violation of VOPPA could face fines of up to $5,000 per violation, with repeat offenders facing even harsher penalties.Privacy advocates and consumer rights groups have praised the new law as a much-needed step in the right direction. Sarah Johnson, a spokesperson for the Virginia Privacy Rights Coalition, stated, "VOPPA is a win for consumers who have long been concerned about the unchecked collection and monetization of their personal data. This law will hold companies accountable and give users the power to make informed decisions about their online privacy."VOPPA is set to go into effect on January 1, 2026, giving companies a grace period to ensure compliance with the new regulations. Virginia joins a growing number of states implementing stricter internet privacy laws, signaling a larger trend towards greater data protection for consumers nationwide.
