Vermont Agricultural Law Law News - Vermont Passes New Agricultural Law to Support Small Farmers

On July 9, 2025, the state of Vermont passed a new agricultural law aimed at supporting small farmers and promoting sustainable farming practices. The law, known as the Small Farm Support and Sustainable Agriculture Act, was proposed by Governor Sarah Thompson and received overwhelming bipartisan support in the state legislature. One of the key provisions of the new law is the establishment of a Small Farm Support Program, which will provide financial assistance to small-scale farmers to help offset the costs of equipment, supplies, and other necessary resources. The program will also offer technical support and training to help these farmers implement sustainable practices on their farms. In addition to supporting small farmers, the law also includes measures to promote sustainable agriculture across the state. This includes incentives for farmers to adopt organic farming practices, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and protect water quality. The law also establishes a Sustainable Agriculture Advisory Board, made up of experts in the field, to provide guidance and recommendations to the state government on agricultural issues.Governor Thompson praised the passage of the new law, stating that it will help ensure the long-term viability of Vermont's agricultural industry while also protecting the environment. "Small farmers are the backbone of Vermont's agricultural sector, and it is crucial that we support them in adopting sustainable practices that will benefit both their businesses and the environment," she said. The Small Farm Support and Sustainable Agriculture Act is set to go into effect on January 1, 2026. Supporters of the law believe that it will not only benefit small farmers in Vermont but also serve as a model for other states looking to promote sustainable agriculture and support small-scale farmers in their communities.
