Ohio Advertising and Consumer Protection Law News - Ohio Cracks Down on False Advertising and Consumer Protections in Response to Recent Scams

In response to a recent wave of scams targeting Ohio consumers, the state government has announced a series of initiatives aimed at cracking down on false advertising and strengthening consumer protections. Governor John Johnson held a press conference earlier today to outline the new measures, which include increased penalties for companies found to be engaging in deceptive practices, as well as expanded resources for consumers to report and seek redress for fraudulent activity. The crackdown comes on the heels of a string of high-profile scams that have left many Ohio residents out of pocket. One such scam involved a company promising guaranteed returns on investment, only to disappear with millions of dollars of investors' money. Another targeted elderly residents with false claims of medical benefits from a questionable product."These scams are not only devastating for the individuals who fall victim to them, but they also erode trust in our state's business community as a whole," Governor Johnson said during the press conference. The department will also be working closely with law enforcement agencies to track down and prosecute those responsible for perpetrating scams. In addition, the state government will be stepping up its efforts to educate consumers about their rights and how to spot and report fraudulent activity. This will include a public awareness campaign featuring television and radio advertisements, as well as outreach events in communities across the state."We want Ohio consumers to feel empowered to speak up and take action when they encounter deceptive practices," said Commerce Director Sarah Smith. "By raising awareness and providing the tools and resources needed to fight back against fraud, we can help ensure that everyone in our state is able to make informed decisions and protect themselves from harm."The new measures have been welcomed by consumer advocacy groups, who have long been calling for stronger protections against false advertising and scams. "We applaud Governor Johnson and the Ohio Department of Commerce for taking decisive action to protect consumers from deceptive business practices," said Jane Thompson, president of the Ohio Consumer Protection League. "These initiatives send a clear message to scammers that their actions will not be tolerated in our state."Ohio residents who believe they have been the victims of false advertising or fraudulent business practices are encouraged to contact the Ohio Department of Commerce's Division of
