The commission highlighted several recent incidents, including the fatal shooting of an unarmed Black man by a police officer in Albuquerque and allegations of excessive force during a protest in Santa Fe. “The recent incidents of police violence in our state are unacceptable and indicative of a larger systemic issue that must be addressed,” said Maria Chavez, the chairperson of the commission. “We cannot continue to allow law enforcement to operate with impunity and disregard the rights and dignity of our communities.”The commission laid out a series of demands for police reform, including the implementation of body cameras for all officers, increased training on de-escalation tactics and implicit bias, and the establishment of a civilian oversight board to review complaints of misconduct. They also called for the creation of a statewide database to track police misconduct and ensure accountability.“We need meaningful and lasting change to rebuild trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve,” said Chavez. “We must hold officers accountable for their actions and ensure that they are upholding the values of justice and equality.”The push for police reform comes amid rising tensions between law enforcement and minority communities in New Mexico. Activists and advocates have been calling for change for years, but recent events have brought renewed urgency to the issue.“We cannot continue to tolerate the abuse of power by those sworn to protect and serve us,” said Javier Martinez, a community organizer in Albuquerque. “It is time for real change and accountability within our police departments.”The New Mexico Civil Rights Commission is urging state lawmakers to take action to address these issues and enact meaningful reforms that will protect the rights and safety of all residents.
