In an effort to streamline the divorce process and reduce the burdensome caseloads facing family law courts in New Jersey, a new mediation program will be implemented for divorcing couples starting next month. The new program, set to launch on September 1, aims to provide divorcing couples with an alternative dispute resolution method that promotes cooperation and communication, ultimately leading to faster and more amicable resolutions.Under the mediation program, couples will have the option to work with a trained mediator to help facilitate discussions and negotiations related to key issues such as child custody, visitation schedules, division of assets, and spousal support. The mediator will act as a neutral third party, guiding the conversation and helping the couple reach mutually agreeable solutions. The program is intended to alleviate the strain on family law courts and reduce the lengthy and costly litigation process that often accompanies divorce proceedings. By empowering couples to take control of their own outcomes and find common ground, the hope is that the overall divorce rate will decrease and families will be able to move forward with their lives more smoothly. In a statement, New Jersey Chief Justice Stephen O'Connell emphasized the importance of alternative dispute resolution methods in family law cases, stating, "Our courts are inundated with divorce cases, and it is clear that a new approach is needed to improve efficiency and outcomes for all involved. Mediation has proven to be a successful tool in resolving disputes outside of court, and we are optimistic that this program will benefit divorcing couples in New Jersey."Couples interested in participating in the mediation program can contact their local family court for more information on how to get started. The program will be available to all divorcing couples in New Jersey, with the goal of expanding to other family law matters in the future.
