Nevada Internet Law Law News - Nevada Legislature Passes New Internet Privacy Law

On December 31, 2025, the Nevada State Legislature passed a groundbreaking new internet privacy law aimed at protecting the personal information of residents and strengthening online security measures. The new law, known as the Internet Privacy Protection Act, is set to go into effect on January 1, 2026, and is being hailed as a significant step forward in safeguarding individual privacy rights in the digital age.Under the provisions of the Internet Privacy Protection Act, internet service providers operating in Nevada will be required to obtain explicit consent from users before collecting or selling their personal data. This includes information such as browsing history, search queries, and location data. Additionally, ISPs will be mandated to inform users of any data breaches within 30 days of discovery. The law also prohibits ISPs from engaging in targeted advertising based on the personal information of users without their consent. Furthermore, ISPs are required to provide users with the option to opt out of any data collection or sharing practices, as well as the ability to request the deletion of their personal data upon request.Supporters of the Internet Privacy Protection Act argue that it is necessary to combat the growing threat of data breaches, identity theft, and other cybercrimes that have become increasingly prevalent in recent years. By giving users greater control over their personal information, the law aims to empower individuals to make informed choices about their online privacy and security. However, critics of the law, particularly within the tech industry, have expressed concerns about the potential impact on business operations and innovation. Some argue that the new regulations could stifle competition and hinder the development of new technologies that rely on the collection and analysis of user data.Despite these concerns, the Nevada State Legislature is confident that the Internet Privacy Protection Act will ultimately benefit residents by enhancing their online privacy and security. With the law set to take effect in just a few hours, internet users in Nevada can look forward to a more secure and privacy-conscious online experience in the coming year.
