Nevada Internet Law Law News - Nevada Introduces New Internet Privacy Law to Protect Consumers

In a landmark move to safeguard the online privacy of its residents, Nevada has passed a groundbreaking internet law that aims to regulate the collection and use of personal data by internet service providers (ISPs) and websites. The bill, officially titled the Nevada Online Consumer Privacy Act (NOCPA), was signed into law on April 11, 2026 by Governor Jessica Reynolds.Under the NOCPA, ISPs and websites operating in Nevada are required to obtain explicit consent from consumers before collecting, using, or selling their personal information. This includes data such as browsing history, search queries, location information, and device identifiers. Additionally, the law mandates that companies must provide consumers with the option to opt out of having their data shared with third parties.Governor Reynolds highlighted the importance of protecting consumers' privacy in an increasingly digital world. "With the rapid advancements in technology, it is crucial that we take proactive measures to ensure that individuals have control over their personal information online," she stated during a press conference announcing the new law.The NOCPA also includes provisions for enforcement and penalties for companies found to be in violation of the law. Violators could face fines of up to $5,000 per violation, with additional penalties for repeat offenses. The Nevada Attorney General's office will be responsible for enforcing the law and investigating complaints from consumers. The passage of the NOCPA has been met with widespread support from privacy advocates and consumer rights groups. "This is a significant step forward in protecting the privacy of Nevada residents and setting a standard for other states to follow," said Sarah Lee, a spokesperson for the Nevada Consumer Rights Alliance. The law is set to go into effect on January 1, 2027, giving companies time to adjust their data collection practices and ensure compliance with the new regulations. Nevada joins a growing number of states that have implemented internet privacy laws in response to concerns about data breaches and the misuse of personal information online. As the digital landscape continues to evolve, the NOCPA represents a significant step towards empowering consumers to have greater control over their online privacy and data security.
