Montana Indians & Native Populations Law News - Montana Indian Tribes Join Forces to Advocate for Land Rights and Cultural Preservation

On December 16, 2025, representatives from various Indian tribes in Montana came together to form a coalition aimed at advocating for land rights, cultural preservation, and social justice for Native populations in the state. The coalition, named the Montana Indigenous Alliance, includes members from the Blackfeet Nation, Crow Tribe, Northern Cheyenne Tribe, and Salish Kootenai Tribes. One of the key issues that the Montana Indigenous Alliance is focusing on is the protection of sacred sites and traditional lands that are currently under threat from development and exploitation. Historically, Native tribes in Montana have faced significant challenges in preserving their ancestral lands and cultural heritage, as a result of colonization, forced removal, and broken treaties. In a press conference held on the steps of the state capitol, leaders of the Montana Indigenous Alliance spoke passionately about the need for recognition and respect for Native rights. "Our lands are not just pieces of real estate to be bought and sold," stated Chief Joseph White Bear of the Crow Tribe. "They are sacred to us, they are our connection to our ancestors and our identity as Indigenous peoples. We will not stand by and watch them be destroyed."The coalition also aims to address issues such as healthcare disparities, educational opportunities, and economic development for Native communities in Montana. Members of the alliance emphasized the importance of working together to advocate for policy changes and social programs that will benefit Indigenous populations across the state."We are stronger together," said Mary Red Cloud, a representative from the Blackfeet Nation. "By joining forces as the Montana Indigenous Alliance, we can amplify our voices and make a real impact on the issues that matter most to our people."The formation of the Montana Indigenous Alliance marks a significant milestone in the ongoing struggle for recognition and justice for Native populations in Montana. As the coalition moves forward with their advocacy efforts, they hope to bring about positive change and promote the rights and well-being of Indigenous communities throughout the state.
