Michigan Internet Law Law News - Michigan Passes New Internet Law Aimed at Protecting Online Privacy

On November 12, 2025, Michigan Governor announced the passing of a new internet law aimed at protecting online privacy for residents of the state. The law, titled the Michigan Online Privacy Protection Act (MOPPA), comes as a response to the increasing concerns over data breaches and online privacy violations.Under MOPPA, internet service providers (ISPs) operating in Michigan are now required to obtain explicit consent from users before collecting and selling their personal data. This includes information such as browsing history, search queries, and location data. ISPs are also prohibited from discriminating against users who choose not to consent to data collection. In addition to consent requirements, MOPPA also mandates that ISPs notify users of any data breaches within 30 days of discovery. This notification must include details of the breach, the type of information that was compromised, and steps that users can take to protect themselves.Governor emphasized the importance of online privacy in the digital age, stating, "With the increasing amount of personal information being collected and sold without users' knowledge, it is essential that we take steps to protect the privacy of Michigan residents."The passing of MOPPA has been met with mixed responses from ISPs and privacy advocates. Some ISPs have expressed concerns over the impact on their business models, while privacy advocates have lauded the law as a step in the right direction towards safeguarding online privacy rights.Overall, the Michigan Online Privacy Protection Act signals a growing trend towards greater transparency and accountability in the online world. It remains to be seen how other states will respond to similar concerns over online privacy and data protection in the future.
