Kentucky Divorce Law News - Kentucky Senate Passes Bill to Streamline Divorce Process

On September 18, 2025, the Kentucky Senate took a significant step towards streamlining the divorce process in the state by passing a new bill aimed at reducing the time and expense involved in obtaining a divorce. The bill, known as Senate Bill 237, was introduced by Senator John Smith and received bipartisan support in the Senate. The bill aims to simplify the divorce process by establishing a no-fault divorce option, which would allow couples to dissolve their marriage without having to prove fault or wrongdoing on the part of either party.Under the proposed legislation, couples would also have the option to opt for a collaborative divorce, which involves working together with a neutral mediator to reach an agreement on the terms of their divorce, rather than going through the traditional adversarial court process. In addition to these new options, the bill also seeks to expedite the divorce process by reducing the mandatory separation period from two years to one year for couples who have minor children, and from one year to six months for couples without children.Supporters of the bill argue that these changes will help to alleviate the emotional and financial burden often associated with divorce proceedings, as well as reduce the backlog of cases in the state's family court system. The bill will now move to the House of Representatives for further consideration. If passed, it is expected to have a significant impact on the divorce process in Kentucky, making it easier and quicker for couples to move on with their lives.
