Illinois Appellate Practice Law News - Illinois Appellate Court Implements New Electronic Filing System to Streamline Practice

In a move aimed at modernizing and improving the efficiency of Illinois appellate practice, the state's Appellate Court has announced the implementation of a new electronic filing system. The system, which was officially launched on March 30, 2026, will allow attorneys to file documents and motions electronically, eliminating the need for traditional paper filings. The new system is part of a larger effort by the Illinois Appellate Court to bring their practices in line with technological advancements in the legal field. According to Chief Justice Rebecca Johnson, the electronic filing system is designed to streamline the appellate process and make it easier for attorneys to submit documents and track the status of their cases."By implementing this new electronic filing system, we hope to make the appellate practice more efficient and accessible for attorneys and litigants," Chief Justice Johnson said in a statement. "This system will not only save time and resources, but it will also help ensure that cases are processed expeditiously and with greater accuracy."Attorneys who wish to file documents electronically will be required to register with the Appellate Court's online portal and pay a small fee for each filing. Once registered, attorneys can submit documents in PDF format and will receive confirmation of their filing along with a unique tracking number for their case. The new system has already received positive feedback from attorneys who have used it. Attorney Sarah Lee, who recently filed a brief using the electronic system, praised its user-friendly interface and convenience."I found the new electronic filing system to be extremely easy to use," Lee said. "It saved me a lot of time and hassle compared to traditional paper filings. I think this is a step in the right direction for Illinois appellate practice."The implementation of the electronic filing system is just the latest in a series of updates and reforms being made by the Illinois Appellate Court to improve the legal experience for attorneys and litigants. With this new system in place, the Appellate Court hopes to further enhance the accessibility and efficiency of the appellate practice in Illinois.
