BOISE, Idaho - Governor John Smith signed a new bill into law today aimed at providing additional support to military veterans in Idaho. The Military Support Act, which was passed by the state legislature last month, includes a number of provisions designed to assist veterans in accessing healthcare, education, and housing services. One of the key components of the new law is the creation of a statewide database to track and monitor the needs of veterans in Idaho. This database will allow state agencies and non-profit organizations to better coordinate their efforts and ensure that veterans receive the support they need.In addition, the Military Support Act includes funding for expanded mental health services for veterans, as well as increased access to job training and placement programs. The bill also establishes a new grant program to help veterans start their own businesses and provides funding for affordable housing projects specifically targeted at veterans.Governor Smith, himself a veteran of the U.S. Army, praised the new law as a significant step forward in supporting Idaho's military community. "Our veterans have made tremendous sacrifices in service to our country, and it is our duty to ensure they have the resources they need to succeed in civilian life," said Governor Smith. The Military Support Act received bipartisan support in the state legislature, with lawmakers from both parties praising the bill as a long-overdue recognition of the contributions of Idaho's veterans. "This legislation is about fulfilling our promise to those who have served our country," said State Senator Jane Doe, who sponsored the bill. The new law will go into effect on January 1, 2026, and state agencies are already working to implement its provisions. Idaho joins a growing number of states across the country that have passed legislation aimed at supporting military veterans and their families.
