Hawaii Mediation Law News - Hawaii Mediation Center Launches New Program to Address Community Disputes

On January 19, 2026, the Hawaii Mediation Center announced the launch of a new program aimed at resolving community disputes in the islands. The program, titled "Aloha Mediation: Building Bridges, Finding Solutions," will provide free mediation services to residents and organizations facing conflicts that may otherwise escalate into legal battles or violence. The Hawaii Mediation Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting peaceful conflict resolution, has been serving the community for over two decades. With the increasing polarization and tensions in society, the center saw the need to expand its services to address conflicts at the grassroots level."We believe that mediation is a powerful tool for fostering understanding, empathy, and cooperation among individuals and groups," said Keala Akina, the executive director of the Hawaii Mediation Center. "By providing a safe and neutral space for parties to communicate and find common ground, we can help prevent conflicts from spiraling out of control."The new program will focus on a wide range of issues, including disputes between neighbors, family members, landlords and tenants, businesses, and community organizations. Trained mediators will work closely with all parties involved to facilitate dialogue, identify underlying interests, and explore mutually acceptable solutions."We want to empower individuals to take ownership of their conflicts and work together to find creative and sustainable resolutions," said Akina. "Mediation is not about winning or losing; it's about coming to a mutual understanding and moving forward with respect and dignity."The launch of the "Aloha Mediation" program has been met with enthusiasm from community leaders, lawmakers, and residents across Hawaii. Many believe that promoting mediation as a first resort in conflict resolution can help build a more harmonious and resilient society."We are facing unprecedented challenges as a community, but we also have unprecedented opportunities to come together and bridge our differences," said Akina. "Through the power of mediation and the spirit of aloha, we can build a more peaceful and inclusive Hawaii for future generations."
