Hawaii Internet Law Law News - Hawaii Introduces New Internet Privacy Law to Protect Residents

In a move to enhance internet privacy protections for its residents, Hawaii lawmakers have announced the introduction of a new internet law on February 24, 2026. The Hawaii Internet Privacy Protection Act, also known as HIPPA, aims to safeguard the personal information and online activities of individuals in the state. The new law requires internet service providers (ISPs) operating in Hawaii to obtain explicit consent from users before collecting or sharing their personal data. This includes information such as browsing history, search queries, and location data. Additionally, ISPs are now mandated to provide clear and transparent explanations of how user data is used and shared, as well as offer users the ability to opt out of certain data collection practices. The Hawaii Internet Privacy Protection Act also includes provisions for enforcing penalties against ISPs that violate the new regulations. Violators may face fines of up to $10,000 per violation, as well as potential suspension or revocation of their operating licenses in the state.State Senator Kai Anderson, a key proponent of the new law, emphasized the importance of protecting the privacy of Hawaii residents in an increasingly digital world. "Our personal information is incredibly valuable and should not be exploited without our consent," Senator Anderson stated. "HIPPA will empower individuals to take control of their online privacy and hold ISPs accountable for their data practices."The introduction of the Hawaii Internet Privacy Protection Act has been met with support from privacy advocates and consumer rights groups, who view the law as a significant step towards strengthening privacy protections in the state. However, some industry representatives have expressed concerns about the potential impact of the new regulations on ISPs and the broader internet ecosystem. As Hawaii joins other states in implementing stricter internet privacy laws, the conversation around online data protection continues to evolve. With the Hawaii Internet Privacy Protection Act now in effect, residents can expect greater transparency and control over their personal information when accessing the internet.
